Project overview

Tribe is a smart home energy management product that connects home energy assets — from solar panels and battery systems to EV chargers and appliances — in a unified user experience. Its goal is to help users understand live energy usage, optimise energy flows, and reduce costs and carbon impact.

I was brought in as Lead Designer to reimagine the brand and user experience of Tribe’s digital presence, including:

  • A brand refresh tailored to an evolved target audience

  • A UX redesign of the mobile app

  • Website design aligned with the new identity

  • Collateral and visual systems that supported the product’s narrative

My work involved brand identity refinement, UX design and strategic visual language across product screens and web interfaces.

Design & UX Process
1. Brand & Audience Refocus
  • Positioned the Tribe brand to better speak to homeowners and energy-savvy users.

  • Refined visual language to reflect trust, simplicity and technological clarity.

  • Redesigned logo and identity elements to feel intuitive and modern within the energy tech space.

2. UX Strategy
  • Audited the existing experience to identify gaps in clarity and engagement.

  • Defined a simplified information hierarchy that made complex energy data accessible.

  • Aligned app navigation and web content with user needs around real-time visibility, control and planning.

3. UX & UI Design
  • Led UX design for key user flows in Adobe XD, from onboarding to live data dashboards.
  • Designed screens showing energy usage, savings, and smart scheduling.

  • Developed visual patterns to support timely insights (energy graphs, alerts, summaries).

4. Website Experience
  • Designed web pages to showcase product value, features and homeowner benefits.
  • Ensured visual consistency with the app’s UI and brand identity.

  • Focused on messaging that clearly communicated why the product matters.

5. Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Worked closely with product leads, developers and senior stakeholders within Lightsource Labs.
  • Balanced technical constraints (e.g., data integration and hardware tie-ins) with user clarity.

  • Iterated based on stakeholder feedback and usability insights.

Challenges

  • Complex energy data: Making live consumption, generation and savings data intuitive for everyday users required careful UX structuring and clear visual hierarchy.

  • Brand-to-product alignment: Ensuring Tribe’s brand identity reflected both trustworthy energy tech and approachability for households involved striking the right balance between utility and personality.

  • Multi-touchpoint design: Aligning experiences across the mobile app and website while keeping interactions simple and engaging.

  • Collaborating with a small core design-tech team while working alongside external stakeholders in product management and technology.

Results

  • Delivered a modernised brand identity that grounded the Tribe product in clarity and user trust.

  • Redesigned the UX of the app and supporting web presence, improving navigation, information hierarchy and visual communication.

  • Provided scalable design patterns that could be applied in future feature evolution.

  • Positioned Tribe as a clearer, more engaging energy management solution that connects technical capability with everyday household use.

Leadership & Ownership
  • Acted as the design lead, driving both brand and UX outcomes from concept through delivery.
  • Balanced creative exploration with practical delivery in a product context.

  • Influenced how the product communicated technical value through better visual storytelling.
